Proudly serving women and families as a Certified Birth Doula. Supporting, educating and empowering pregnant women, to make informed decisions and to trust their bodies in birth.
My name is Susan Mossman and I am a certified Birth Doula. A birth doula is a person experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth. In 2012 when my family arrived at RAF Lakenheath I was in my first trimester of pregnancy. My husband received deployment orders almost immediately after our arrival. He left in my 5th month and returned 3 months after our daughter was born. The midwife at the ob clinic introduced me to the group “M!nd the Gap”. I was deeply moved by the support these women gave me as well as each other while their spouses were deployed. Since then, I have had a great desire to reach out to women and families affected by deployments and geographical separation. Due to the high number of deployments the need to support these women and their families is urgent and critical. I joined this support group in a leadership role and will give my support to these families at a discounted rate.
I decided to pursue becoming a Certified Birth Doula in order to support women with their birth experience. I have always been amazed and fascinated by the miracle of birth. I received my formal training and education through DONA International in 2013 and received Birth and Postnatal Doula certification in 2014. I received my lactation counselor certification through Healthy Children’s Center for Breastfeeding in 2013 and enjoy helping women in their breastfeeding journey. I became a childbirth instructor through the Red Cross in 2014 and trained through ICEA (International Childbirth Education Association) in 2018. I teach a Birth Workshop here in North Carolina both privately and in groups.
We are currently stationed in Jacksonville, NC. Before this we were at Hill AFB in Utah, RAF Lakenheath in England and Malmstrom AFB in Montana though I originate from California. My husband is active-duty and is from California as well. We have two children, Mateo 20 & Margaret 6. We both enjoy spending time with our family and love to travel and experience new places, people, cultures and cuisine.
Additional education and training:
I have completed two Spinning Babies workshops taught by Gail Tulley as well as Marya Molette, Supporting Every Birth a workshop on bereavement taught by the lovely Michelle Every, and a Placenta Encapsulation training taught by Lauretta Stephenson, A Loving Doula. I am passionate about childbirth education and trained as an instructor through the Red Cross. I then trained through the International Childbirth Educator Association (ICEA) in 2018.
