As a birth doula I will….

Provide you with emotional, physical comfort and, as needed, communication with the staff to make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions, as they arise in labor.  I will provide you with reassurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions for labor progress and help with relaxation, massage, positioning and other techniques for comfort.  Above all, I will encourage, support and empower you. This is YOUR birth and YOUR birth experience. I will honor YOUR wishes and needs.

I will not…

Perform clinical or medical tasks, make decisions for you or speak to the medical staff on your behalf, regarding matters where decisions are being made.

When you are in labor

*For medical advice please contact Labor & Delivery. Please call me when you think that you are in labor. I can answer questions and make suggestions over the phone. At this point, we can decide if you need further assistance, or if we should wait for further changes. We will also decide where to meet either at your home or the hospital etc. I will arrive at the agreed location as quickly as possible, at most no longer than 2 hours. I live in Huber and there is always the possibility that I will be “out and about”. Except for extraordinary circumstances, I will be with you during your labor and birth. In the rare event that I should become ill or a family emergency arises, I will notify you as soon as possible.

If you have a scheduled or unscheduled c-section, I will need to obtain permission from your L&D nurse, provider and the anesthesiologist to be present.  If you have a scheduled c-section, I will discuss and obtain permission from the staff in advance and advise you.  An unscheduled or emergency c-section will always be at the discretion of the medical staff.  However, I will try my best to remain at your side.  Additionally, please keep in mind that if your spouse or partner is with you, there may be a limit on the people allowed into the surgical suite.  Prenatal and postpartum services as described herein.

Rapid Labor

In the event of rapid labor, or an emergency i.e. excessive bleeding etc., please call the appropriate emergency response phone number immediately.  If I am present,  I will provide care to you and/or your baby until more advanced medical care arrives.  *Please note that this care will fall under the GOOD SAMARITAN LAW.

After the birth

I will remain with you for 1-2 hours after birth, until you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together.

I will call and visit you within 2 weeks of your baby’s birth, to see how you are doing, to review the birth, to admire your baby and to get feedback from you about my services.

Failure to provide services

I will make every effort to provide the services described herein.  Sometimes this is impossible (for example, with a rapid labor, personal illness, family emergency etc.)  Again, this is rare, but you need to be aware of these circumstances and have understanding accordingly. Additionally, I will let you know prior to scheduling our first visit and/or at our first visit if there are any dates close to your due date when I will not be available.

As I work alone, I work on a “waitlist” system, if clients are close in due dates. When this occurs, I will refer you to other local doulas or you can still choose to be waitlisted. Once client #1 delivers then I will contact client #2. Please understand, if you are waitlisted, there is no guarantee that I will be able to be your doula. I take up to 3 clients per month. Please keep in mind that I am on-call for a client 10 days prior to their due date and up to 10 days past their due date.

On-call 24/7 (as available) for women affected by a spouse that is deployed, or TDY.
